An Australian, Malcolm Williamson was the first non-Briton to hold the post of Master of the Queen's Music. He was appointed in 1975 as a composer. How Innovation, Evolution, and Determination Made Paul Harris Great
What happened to Montgomery Ward, L.S. Ayers, Gimbels, Wanamaker's, and Marshall Fields? And what happened to the Paul Harris Stores? They were all casualties of the retail store battles in which the life expectancy is twenty years or less. `Darryl Glaser supplies an illuminating overview of the scholarship since 1970 on South Africa's political history. His emphasis is on the debates between liberals, Marxists, and to a lesser extent "post-structuralists" about the origins and the course of South Africa's racial order' - Tom Lodge, University of Witwatersrand `A well-researched, ......
This collection deals with the central questions which have emerged from the break-up of the postwar political consensus around the welfare state. A series of distinguished contributors, including exponents of alternative positions on welfare from the right, left and centre, examine key issues in the disputes over the relationship between the state and welfare. Individual chapters both explore the different political and theoretical issues in the debate, and concentrate on their application in key areas of social policy. Particular attention is given to the role of social work, and public policy and the family. The final section of the book examines the political sources of the current crisis of social policy, and the prospects for a resolution of the crisis of the welfare state. The State or the Market is a set book on the Open University Course D211, Social Problems and Social Welfare.
In this book one of Europe's foremost sociologists offers an overview of the trajectory of European societies, East and West, since the end of World War 11. Combining theoretical depth with factual analysis, Goran Therborn addresses the questions that underpin an understanding of the nature of European modernity: To what extent has the period 1945-2000 produced fundamental change and what are the areas of continuity? Have the societies of Europe become more similar to others on the globe or more distinctively European? Are they more differentiated or more similar to each other? What are the prospects of Europe after the decades of postwar change and after the end of the Cold War? These questions are addressed through an analysis of contemporary Europe from a number of fresh angles. Issues covered include the division of paid and unpaid labour, patterns of rights in different social spheres, the development of mass consumption, the evolution of risks, the spatial range of economic and cultural change, collective memory and identities, the geography of happiness, and modes of collective action. The author also relates these issues to the two great social steering projects of the period socialism in the East, and the European Union in the West. This text relates empirical detail to a critical view of the grand picture. It should be useful reading for all students of the politics and sociology of Europe and contemporary industrial societies.
