  • Psychology as Metaphor

  • Recent debate has increasingly focused on the prominence of metaphor and rhetoric in psychological discourse. Underpinning this research is the view that psychology offers a unique insight into the creation of persuasive texts and that such a discipline needs to become itself an object of inquiry. In developing this view "Psychology as Metaphor" scrutinizes a wide range of traditional psychological theory including neuropsychology and memory, childhood development, the IQ debate, accounts of emotion, and psychological descriptions of the mind, to show how rhetorical strategies and the deployment of metaphor are central to the work of creating a convincing theoretical account. This book explores the distinction between philosophy and rhetoric, and offers an interdisciplinary analysis of theories of metaphor and language while pointing to future directions for research in the study of scientific rhetoric. Its theoretical breadth is matched by the book's wide-ranging treatment of key thinkers from Darwin, James and Freud, through Watson, Lashley, Piaget, Vygotsky, Skinner and Burt to recent texts from writers in contemporary psychology such as Kamin, Eysenck, Rumelhart and Shallice. This book should be useful reading for psychologists, historians and sociologists of science, philosophers of the social sciences and anyone with an interest in how the study of rhetoric can shed light on the creation of persuasive psychological theory.

  • The New Production of Knowledge

  • The Dynamics of Science and Research in Contemporary Societies
  • In this provocative and broad-ranging work, a distinguished team of authors argues that we are now seeing fundamental changes in the ways in which scientific, social and cultural knowledge is produced. They show how this trend marks a distinct shift towards a new mode of knowledge production which is replacing or reforming established institutions, disciplines, practices and policies. Identifying a range of features associated with this new mode - reflexivity, transdisciplinarity, heterogeneity - the authors illustrate the connections between these features and the changing role of knowledge in social relations. While the main focus is on research and development in science and technology, the book outlines the changing dimensions of social scientific and humanities knowledge. The relations between the production of knowledge and its dissemination through education are also examined. "The New Production" of Knowledge places science policy and scientific knowledge in its broader context within contemporary societies. It will be essential reading for all those concerned with the changing nature of knowledge, the social study of science, educational systems, and with the relations between R&D and social, economic and technological development.

  • Feminist Media Studies

  • This study aims to provide a critical introduction to the relations between gender, media and culture. Feminists have long recognized the significance of the media as a site for the expression of - or challenges to - existing gender relations. This broad-ranging analysis explores the ways in which feminist theory and feminist research contribute to a fuller understanding of the multiple roles of the media in the construction of gender in contemporary societies. The text intially outlines some major themes in feminist media studies and the ways in which they offer specific models for understanding the media. It goes on to examine key questions posed by a gender approach within communication and cultural studies. Other issues explored include: theories of transmission, representation, construction and discourse; structure of media organization and production; interpreting media representation though content analysis and semiotics; contradictions of the gendered image as spectacle; new approaches to understanding the audience and the politics of media reception; and the potential of feminist and interpretive researtch strategies. Providing a synthesis of theoretical and empirical work, this book should be of interest to students of communications, cultural studies and women's studies.

  • Baroque Reason

  • The Aesthetics of Modernity
  • In this exploration of the aesthetics of modernity, Christine Buck-Glucksmann argues that in periods of perceived crisis a new form of rationality emerges to replace reasoned ways of thinking. She examines a number of key themes for modern social theory: the critique of instrumental rationality, the political crisis of loss of community and of innocence with the development of industrialization, as well as the impact of relativism on realist theories of knowledge. After examining the condition of modernity - alienation, melancholy and nostalgia - the author goes on to explore the place of the feminine in discussions of modernity: how woman is used as one of the main sources of allegorical interpretations of modernity; and how the feminine comes to stand for and represent the miraculous, the utopian, the dangerous and the androgynous. In the final part, she identifies Nietzsche, Adorno, Musil, Baudelaire, Barthes and Lacan as constituting a baroque paradigm, and lays the foundation for a baroque reason. In her explanation of themes fundamental to our contemporary condition, she invites the reader beyond post-modernism to a realm of the Other.

  • Shifting Identities Shifting Racisms

  • A Feminism & Psychology Reader
  • This collection makes an important contribution to contemporary feminist and psychological debates on identities and racisms. It addresses issues of commonalities, differences, subjectivities and the contradictory nature of positionings which are central concerns for feminist and anti-racist politics. Leading feminists examine: the ways in which psychology has reproduced racism; the complexity of issues of identities and racisms which are shown to be multiple, constantly variable and renegotiable; the need to problematize and unpack `whiteness'; and the problems of identity politics both in terms of explanatory power and political action.
