  • Banal Nationalism

  • While traditional theorizing has tended to focus on extreme expressions of nationalism, the author turns his attention to the everyday, less invisible forms that are deeply ingrained in contemporary consciousness. This form of nationalism, which is neither exotic nor remote, he describes as "banal nationalism". The author asks why people do not forget their national identity. He suggests that in daily life nationalism is constantly flagged in the media through routine symbols and habits of language. Small familiar turns of phrase, like the flag which hangs unnoticed outside a public building, are reminders that often operate mindlessly, beyond the level of conscious awareness.

  • Auto-Industrialism

  • DIY Capitalism and the Rise of the Auto-Industrial Society
  • DIY check-outs, drones, self-driving cars, and e-government all are signs of the coming auto-industrial age. Will this end in mass unemployment or will new kinds of work emerge? Will 3D print production, desktop workshops and mass customization make up for lost blue-collar jobs? What will happen to health and education in the auto-industrial age? Will machines replace teachers and doctors? What might the economic and social future dominated by self-employment and a large DIY industry look like? Peter Murphy's lively, provocative book addresses these questions head-on.

  • Autoethnography

  • From the 1980s onwards, there has been what has frequently been described as an auto/biographical turn in the social sciences and also in the arts and humanities. Changes in conceptions of self, society and identity, post-modern, post-structural and post-colonial influences and sensibilities to name but a few have all played their part in focusing attention on to, and valorising the perceptions and experiences of the individual. Now, at a time of exciting development for the subject, this new four-volume set seeks to capture the important articles that have come out of the field over the past decades. Framed by a newly-written introductory chapter, the collection includes work that spans disciplinary boundaries, bringing together a comprehensive resource taht will prove invaluable to scholars in the field.

  • Autism and Understanding

  • The Waldon Approach to Child Development
  • [The authors] provide a detailed breakdown of the scientific underpinnings of Waldon's theory in language accessible enough for parents and rigorous enough to satisfy the informed researcher/practitioner. - The Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders Daniel S. Posner, Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Icahn School of medicine at Mt Sinai, New York, NY The author sets out an approach based on Dr Geoffrey Waldon's philosophy of the development of understanding, which centres on helping children learn-how-to-learn. The book includes: - The inspirational and well documented story of the author's son, diagnosed at two with autism and as 'basically sub-normal', now a successful professional with a wife and child. - An introduction to Geoffrey Waldon's theory and working methods. - Testimony from parents and teachers, covering autism and a range of learning difficulties. This book does not offer a 'miracle cure' for autism, although the author aims to counteract the prevailing view that autism is a lifetime condition. The author demonstrates that with the appropriate intervention, children with autism - and other special needs - can gain a fuller understanding of the world and learn to take a constructive and contributing place in it. Teachers, therapists, doctors, parents and special interest groups will find this book an important and potentially transformational read.
