This textbook provides a critical analysis of how the criminal justice system responds to individuals with mental illnesses. Its distinct focus on public policy analysis, constitutionality, and the implications of conflicting policies that influence this response ensures that readers come away with an understanding of both macro and micro aspects of this criminal justice challenge. With an eye toward rehabilitation and restorative justice, the book underscores the reality of comorbidity and examines how policies have led to a negative criminal justice response toward those with mental illnesses.
Christopher Sharp is a former probation officer in Central Florida, where he was responsible for writing and implementing a post-booking diversion program for the mentally ill for Seminole County, Florida. He holds a Ph.D. in public affairs and has been studying and writing on the impact of the mentally ill on the criminal justice system since 2000. He is both a retired Army officer and a retired federal employee, responsible for analyzing, interpreting, and implementing public policy for the military in human resources, and has been teaching and writing in public policy analysis since 2014.
