The general view about regionalism seems to be that it is better to have regionalized and faltered than never to have regionalized at all! Taking this as its point of departure, this study provides a comparative sketch of regionalism in South and Southeast Asia. The book argues that regionalism is here to stay and both imitation and innovation are the preferred strategies for sustaining the process. It points out that economic integration requires certain prior conditions to be fulfilled and does not happen merely because governments wish it to happen.
Well-written, crammed full of insight, realistic but open-eyed to actual and potential strengths and weaknesses, this study of ASEAN and SAARC with some reference to the EU is extremely well-balanced. - AJR Groom, Emeritus Professor of International Relations, University of Kent at Canterbury ""... based on meticulous details and analytical precision, this study on SAARC and ASEAN enriches the available literature on comparative regional studies."" - S.D. Muni, Former Professor JNU and Ambassador
