Letters to the Pope is a deeply spiritual memoir of Peter Breen, a practicing Catholic pilgrim who goes on a transformative journey to the Marian healing shrines of Lourdes, Fatima and Medjugorje.
Through these sacred places that are renowned for their miracles and reported prophecies, Peter seeks not only a renewal of faith but answers to the mystery of the Marian apparitions.
Told through a series of heartfelt letters addressed to the Pope, the book is rich in insight, personal reflection and spiritual yearning, inviting readers into a quest for truth, hope and faith in a world longing for meaning.
Peter Breen studied at St Columba’s College Springwood, a minor seminary in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney in the late 1960s before studying and practicing law in 1973. In 1990 he travelled to Rome and the Vatican with the benefit of a letter of introduction to the Pope from Australian writer Morris West. Whilst there, Peter spent time researching and writing about Marian apparitions in the Vatican Secret Archives. After retiring from his career in law and politics, he began planning a pilgrimage to the Marian apparition shrines of Europe to renew his faith. During the pilgrimage, he wrote letters to the Pope about the Church giving formal approval to the Marian apparitions at Medjugorje in Bosnia Herzegovina. He plans to return to Medjugorje in 2025.
* Letters to the Pope is a poignant series of letters to Pope Francis with an update to Pope Leo XIV written by author and pilgrim Peter Breen during his pilgrimage across the Marian healing shrines of Europe.
* The book includes deeply private revelations from six people whose encounter at the healing shrine in Medjugorje in Bosnia Herzegovina could represent a “significant foresight” into what the future holds.
* With a Nihil Obstat, this book challenges the new Pope on urgent global issues (climate collapse, inequality and moral crisis) framed through the prophetic lens of Medjugorje.
* A timely book following the death of Pope Francis and the installation of Pope Leo XIV.
* ‘Peter Breen, having been a lawyer and a member of the New South Wales Parliament, has long been dedicated to human rights for all, especially those on the margins... He wrote often to Pope Francis [and] has now written to Pope Leo XIV. No doubt, Peter’s letters will engage a wider public now that Prime Minister Albanese has asked Pope Leo to bless his mother’s rosary beads.’ – Fr Frank Brennan SJ AO, Adjunct Professor of the Thomas More Law School, Australian Catholic University
