This text covers the process by which the Hollywood "hypnosis" machine works and those who challenge that model. The first half of the anthology dives into the topics of the script, production design, cinematography, editing, sound design, and directing, and how they cohesively create a singular vision. The second half covers a key selection of avant-garde filmmakers and international cinema-those who challenge the Hollywood model to get their unique voices heard.
Kurt Lancaster is a professor and the coordinator of Creative Media and Film at Northern Arizona University. He has written several books on filmmaking, including Basic Cinematography: A Creative Guide to Visual Storytelling. His documentaries have screened at national and international film festivals, and his award-winning students have gone on to start their own production house businesses, work as freelancers, and secure positions within the industry. He holds a Ph.D. in performance studies from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and an M.A. in theater from the University of Maine.
