Award-winning children's book author, Dr Sarah Pye, presents her latest wildlife adventure in a new middle-grade chapter book, Curious Kai Asks Why. Have you ever wondered if songbirds have accents? Or if fish can fly? Or whether bats are rats with wings or birds with fur? 10-year-old Kai, whose mind is constantly brimming with curiosity, has questions like these all the time. She and her artistic mum hitch up their camper trailer and go in search of scientists, and species, who have the answers. Kai is convinced the answers to her burning questions about Queensland's diverse wildlife will help her save the world. Curious Kai Asks Why is suitable for children aged 8-12 with enquiring minds, and it makes a fabulous teaching tool.
From the age of 13, Sarah was boat-schooled while she sailed around the world with her parents and brother. She swam with dolphins, survived storms, and held night watches. Sarah has had many adventures as an adult too: driving whale-watch boats in Hawaii, exploring Australia in a campervan, and leading wildlife tours in Borneo. Sarah is worried about the endangered species she has met and inspired by the scientists protecting them.
* Curious Kai Asks Why is an adventure story about a relatable inquisitive girl with endless quirky questions about Australian wildlife. She and her artistic mum hook up their camper and go in search of the REAL scientists and species with the answers. * This book is special because it features some of the less known Australian animals like cassowaries, fruit bats, praying mantis and loggerhead turtles. It is also special because the 12 profiled experts and scientists are REAL, giving young readers a window into the world of science. * It is perfect for animal and nature-loving readers, children who love adventure quests, and educators who want new, innovative ways to engage children with the STEM curriculum. Publicity: Curious Kai Asks Why has been two years in the making and taken its author on adventures connecting with scientists and experts throughout Queensland. Those experts will be collaborating on a series of launch events in Cairns, Sunshine Coast and Brisbane in September/October 2025. This launch tour will be promoted through schools, libraries and media outlets state-wide. In addition, an online book launch in late September will be promoted directly to schools throughout Australia and free for classrooms to attend.
