The Xinkan language family is the only pre-colonial, non-Mayan language group in Mesoamerica. This is a truly multilingual dictionary, offering forms, functions, and information in four Xinkan languages (Chiquimulilla, Guazacapan , Jumaytepeque, and Yupiltepeque), Spanish, and English, alongside brief grammar sketches in both English and Spanish. This dictionary will be useful for scholars of Mesoamerica and language learners, and an invaluable resource for the Xinkan community.
Chris Rogers is associate professor of linguistics at Brigham Young University. He is the author of The Use and Development of the Xinkan Languages as well as many academic articles detailing the grammatical structures of the Xinkan languages and their place within Mesoamerica. Lyle Campbell is professor emeritus of linguistics at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. He is the author of 25 books and 200+ articles, and the cofounder of the Catalogue of Endangered Languages. Terrence Kaufman (1937-2022) was professor emeritus of linguistics and anthropology at the University of Pittsburgh. A dominant figure in Mesoamerican linguistics, he co-founded the Proyecto Lingueistico "Francisco Marroquin" and the Project for the Documentation of the Languages of MesoAmerica.
"Xinka Indigenous people have been subject to extreme discrimination. Some people in Guatemala deny their right to endure. This dictionary is extremely important in order to demonstrate that Xinka people have existed and still exist."--Claudia Dary Fuentes, Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala
