Moose! The Reading Dog is inspired by the true story of a therapy dog. Moose shares his story about finding his forever home and learning how to become a registered therapy dog. In the final chapter, Moose reflects on his journey and describes his love for helping children become better readers. Along the way, readers learn about hard work and the importance of finding and pursuing one's dream.
Laura Bruneau, PhD, is a professor at Adams State University in the Department of Counselor Education. Bruneau has coauthored four publications in the area of animal-assisted interventions. In her most important role, Bruneau is Moose's human. Beverly Timmons, EdD, is a professor emeritus at Kent State University in the Department of Teaching, Curriculum, and Leadership Studies. Timmons develops balanced, effective literacy programs for children and teachers. Mic Ru is a self-taught fine artist from childhood who later would hone his skills by obtaining a BFA in graphic design and illustration at New Mexico State University. He illustrated The Dog Tags Comics, Christmas Town, Ryan the Dinosaur, The Bee Who Sneezed, The Rat Who Loved Math, The Lizard in a Blizzard, and The Duck Without a Quack.
Programs in which children read aloud in the company of a registered and insured therapy dog/handler team are gaining acceptance among educators and families. A growing body of research suggests that high-quality, innovative "read/dog" programs often motivate children to practice reading aloud and increase reading achievement as well. Moose's story provides a compelling example of the reciprocal benefits of canine-assisted reading activities for children and for very special dogs. --Mary Renck Jalongo, Ph.D. Editor-in-chief, Early Childhood Education Journal Book Series Editor, Educating the Young Child
