Years of working in the area of penal abolition have developed Ruth Morris's thinking on justice issues. In 'Stories of Transformative Justice', she outlines why the current adversarial system of justice fails victims, offenders, their families, and ultimately society in general. Citing stories from Canada, the United States, New Zealand, Australia, and Aboriginal communities around the world, Morris shows there is another path that can transform misery victimisation and punishment into new opportunities for healing and understanding. An inspiring work which proves that 'turning the other cheek' holds the power of transformation.
Ruth Morris is a Quaker with a doctorate in sociology and social work. She is the spiritual force behind CSPI's Social Justice series. Twenty years of work in the criminal justice system and as a university professor, social activist, speaker, and author have enabled her to build many alternatives, including the Toronto Bail Program, a mediation service, and two halfway houses. She founded the International Conference on Penal Abolition and has spoken on the need for better justice systems in Central America, Canada, the United States, New Zealand, Australia, and Europe.
Part I: Listening: The First Step in Transformation Chapter 1: What is Transformative Justice? Chapter 2: Stories of Listening Chapter 3: Anyone can Play the Game: Pat Chapter 4: Widening the Circles of Prison Work Part II: Transformative Processes Chapter 5: Circle Sentencing and Family Group Conferences as Transformative Justice Chapter 6: The ""F"" Word: Where Does Forgiveness Come In? Part III: Key Challenges in Transformation Chapter 7: But Does it Satisfy Us? Chapter 8: Transforming Distributive Injustice Chapter 9: Transformative Justice: Power for the Future
The vision of transformative justice stands as critique and a reminder that the issues surrounding crime cannot be separated from the issue of distributive justice. Concrete practices like sentencing circles, listening, talking and feeling construct a healing space where mutual obligations, responsibility and commitments develop. Storytelling is a powerful way of sharing the experience of transformation. Ruth Morris' collection of stories does this in a compelling way."" - Judge Bria Huculak
