Ruffian's tragic story still has a powerful hold over horse racing enthusiasts. The big, almost-black filly so dominated her peers that none could get near her on the racetrack. Then came the fateful match against Kentucky Derby winner Foolish Pleasure--the race in which she lost her life.
Milton C. Toby, JD, has enjoyed a lifelong involvement with horses, as an exhibitor of American Saddlebreds; as a competitor in hunter, combined training, and dressage events; as a steward for the American Horse Shows Association; as a director of the Kentucky Horse Council; as a journalist; and as a photographer. He is the author of Dancer's Image: The Forgotten Story of the 1968 Kentucky Derby, Taking Shergar: Thoroughbred Racing's Most Famous Cold Case, and Col. Sager, Practitioner, which recounts the experiences of the late Col. Floyd Sager, one of the country's most prominent equine veterinarians.
