Few teachers in Hollywood bring the range of experience to their work that Jay Scully does. For decades, Scully has worked with veteran and novice actors alike in virtually every area of today's business: as a casting director for over 50 feature films and television shows; as an instructor of acting technique at the university level and in private one-on-one instruction; and as an on-set coach on features for acclaimed directors like J.J. Abrams (Super 8), James Wan (Furious 7), Judd Apatow (This Is 40), and Davis Guggenheim (Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie). The Screen Actor's Guide to Auditioning is Scully's brisk, practical guide for screen actors at all career stages, sharing indispensable guidance on wowing directors, producers, and casting directors to land roles at a time of unprecedented technological and economic tumult in the industry. Among the topics covered here: ? How to maximize the impact of your taped auditions ? The critical differences between auditioning for stage and screen roles ? Understanding the needs and desires of key decisionmakers, and ensuring you don't waste their time ? How to read between the lines of casting notices, breakdowns, and appointment sheets to determine what directors are really looking for ? How to field "curveballs" thrown at you in the middle of an audition ? And much more!
Jay Scully is one of Hollywood's most accomplished acting teachers, casting directors and private coaches, with clients like (the late) Paul Walker (Fast & Furious), Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire), Xolo Mariduena (Blue Beetle), Lewis Pullman (Top Gun: Maverick), and many others. He has coached on-set for directors such as J.J. Abrams (Super 8), Judd Apatow (This Is 40), James Wan (Furious 7), and most recently Director X (Superfly) and Academy Award-winning director Davis Guggenheim (Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie). He has cast over 50 feature films and television shows, and was a professor of Screen Acting at Chapman University in Orange, California, in addition to being the in-house Screen Acting teacher at South Coast Repertory Theater in Costa Mesa. He has conducted acting workshops across the country, at the college and high school levels. He co-created and directed the 2018 pilot and presentation Big & $ave, with John Brotherton (Fuller House) and Carly Craig (Swipe Right).
