"The Intelligence of Clouds" is Stanley Moss' third collection of poems. 'We must be grateful to the Anvil Press for importing Stanley Moss', wrote John Fuller of his first, "The Wrong Angel" (1969). Reviewing "Skull of Adam" (1979) in the "Poetry Review", John Mole found impressive 'the success with which Moss coaxes his theme of the infinite preciousness of life close to death from small, domestic details...It is hard to give an adequate impression of Moss' twin gifts of wit and lyricism by extracting. They are inseparable'.
Stanley Moss was born in New York City. He was educated at Trinity College and Yale University. He makes his living as a private art dealer, largely in Spanish and Italian old masters, and is the publisher and editor of The Sheep Meadow Press, a non-profit press devoted to poetry.
There are many great strengths in this book: a speaking voice assured in its rhythms, a language both exalted and plain, a mind that can think to the point of revelation within its elected figures or images. But such poems as 'The Debt' and 'For Margaret' are not to be described in terms of mere virtuosity. Their power comes of the fact that they are genuine - that they arise, as Yeats said poems must, 'from the poet's deep and honest quarrel with himself.' - Richard Wilbur 'The Intelligence of Clouds' is a book of great originality. Each poem has its own original life. I return to this poetry again and again. - Yehuda Amichai It is time to celebrate, with the publication of 'The Intelligence of Clouds', the singular beauty and power of Stanley Moss's poetry. He is a citizen of the world, both past and present, one who seems to have been everywhere and missed nothing. These are poems, out of the fullness of a life, that impress me as being all at once deep, strange, loving, bountiful, and a joy to read. - Stanley Kunitz
