This groundbreaking work is the first major study of United States Indian policy during the landmark years of the Kennedy and Johnson presidencies. Although both men favoured new policies that would have fostered the survival of American Indian cultures and heritages, they faced opposition from western senators who insisted on carrying out the so-called termination policies that had been initiated by Congress as early as the late 1940s. These policies, generally designed to bring to a close the federal government's administrative responsibility for American Indian tribes, led to such controversial practices as forced urban relocations of American Indians and redistribution of tribal assets in ways that received widespread criticism. Opposition to termination policy in the Kennedy/Johnson years, meanwhile, heralded an unprecedented explosion of American Indian political activism and political power through public-awareness campaigns and lobbying on both the local and national fronts.
Thomas Clarkin
""Federal Indian Policy in the Kennedy and Johnson Administrations" does an excellent job of putting this decade into proper perspective" "Clarkin has written an important history and a valuable reference that deserves a place on the shelf beside other works of federal Indian policy." "This well-written book will go a long way toward answering the questions of those interested in recent policy developments" "Thomas Clarkin has produced a thoroughly researched and clearly written study of federal Indian policy in the 1960's. The author skillfully integrates archival sources with rich interviews of those who shaped policy during a turbulent decade and does not neglect the American Indian perspective. The narrative is a fine microstudy and complements the larger works on federal policy." Clarkins examination of the Kennedy and Johnson decade is an excellent addition to political studies of recent Indian history . . . Evaluation of the political actors adds to the merit of this monograph. Strongly recommended for undergraduate libraries.
