Finally, a standards-based leadership induction program that will help every principal flourish! Many school administrator candidates enter the principalship with great potential, but sometimes lack the critical guidance to ensure their success. With the many challenges facing principals daily, it is imperative for new and seasoned principals alike to remain informed, rejuvenated, and passionate about providing students with a quality education and supporting high quality teachers and an effective staff. Principal Induction focuses on the importance of an effective induction process in the recruitment, development, and retention of school principals. The first of its kind, this standards-based format seamlessly weaves the new Educational Leadership Constituent Council (ELCC) standards-resulting from the work of ten leading educational organizations interested in school leadership and improvement-into the principal induction process. Developing this unique approach, while providing encouragement and support, Wilmore produces case studies, professional development activities and how-to's for: Improving schools by enhancing the human and leadership qualities of administrators Promoting positive school culture Creating collaborative teams to support all stakeholders Addressing inconsistent follow-up and unreliable accountability systems in a structured, productive manner By cultivating their own individual growth and development through an effective induction program, school leaders will revitalize their professional and personal lives, and move from surviving to flourishing during their principalship years.

"Elaine Wilmore is a cheerleader for principals. This book provides a winning game plan to help new principals thrive in the field of school leadership!" -- Sandra Harris, Associate Professor of Educational Leadership "The next best thing to hearing Elaine Wilmore live and in person is to read Principal Induction. In this book, she transforms yet another set of standards-based hoops into understandable stories, providing new principals with what they are expected to know and do. There's no one like Elaine who can spin a folksy yarn and teach the ELCC standards at the same time." -- Jesse Jai McNeil, Jr., President "Finally! Elaine Wilmore has provided a practical and effective means for newly appointed school administrators to help themselves over the rough spots that all new school leaders face. Principal Induction provides a solid, research-based, standards-based framework to provide the critical support all new school leaders need to be successful." -- Leonard O. Pellicer, Dean "With a rich mix of research and practice, this book is for all school administrators and especially for administrator preparation programs and district mentor programs targeting induction of new principals. Wilmore's blend of practical and inspiring approaches is an exceptional addition to educational leadership that will be appreciated by all who read this book." -- Rosemary Papalewis, Director, Center for Teaching and Learning "Judiciously written, this book captures both the essence and the edges of principal induction with a standards-based model." -- Helen Ditzhazy "The book provides a comprehensive guide for designing professional development geared toward the successful induction and socialization of principals into professional practice. Without a doubt, this book is a must-read for all new principals and their mentors as they embark on their leadership journey!" -- Judith Aiken, Associate Dean, College of Education and Social Services "She does it again! In her down-to-earth, serious, yet humorous style, Elaine Wilmore has created a survival guide for beginning principals. Her translation of the ELCC standards into the daily reality of a principalship truly connects the dots between the theory and the practice of the standards." -- Bev Kasper, Assistant Professor of Education "The shortage of qualified candidates for school leadership positions has shortened the time between preparation program completion and appointment as a school leader. At the same time, school leadership has become much more challenging as principals are expected to change schools and increase student achievement. There has never been a time when induction was more needed for our nation's school leaders. Principal Induction is a valuable resource for this vital area of school improvement." -- Kermit Buckner, Professor and Chair
