ILLUSTRATED MIDDLE GRADE FICTION. A clever and witty story with superbly original similes about recycling, school bullies and dads. Daniel Jeffries knows cars. More importantly, he knows his dad's car, a 1970 Ford XW Falcon GT, his dad's pride and joy. Daniel helped restore it. But then his dad became obsessed with recycling. Now the GT is a GT - oh no! To have a dump for a backseat is the worst. Especially when the school bully discovers Daniel. The flies. The filth. The funk. When Daniel flees in his dad's car rather than admit to the school bully that the guy hanging out of the industrial bin is his father, a bevy of father/son shenanigans ensues. Enter the police, a megaphone, a recycling station, and ... zombies!
Author/illustrator, Lawrey Goodrick, has penned many screenplays, but he wanted to explore the inner psyche of characters, something he found limiting in film. The thought of doing outrageous things makes him laugh so he decided to take those opportunities of fun, throw in a dash of danger to heighten the likelihood of being caught, and explore the mindset of youth in the moment, addled with the confusion that comes from adolescence and the thrust of being thrown into the adult world of harsh justice. He was well into his twenties when he discovered his favourite audience to entertain was teens and children, an age that he himself wasn’t fully able to enjoy as he was consumed with childhood anxiety and depression. Lawrey turns challenging experiences on their head, with his witty, visual stories exploring layered themes.
